The Freedom to Choose
A practice in noticing where choice is available
Begin by noticing that you are here,
as a living presence,
already participating in this moment.
Let your attention rest for a few breaths on the simple fact of being alive right now.
Notice the rhythm of your breath.
Notice the contact between your body and what supports it.
Allow yourself to arrive fully.
Now let attention turn inward, simply to observe.
What is the atmosphere of this moment for you— busy, calm, tense, open?
What thoughts are moving through awareness?
What emotions are present, even in the background?
Notice what is here, just as it is.
Then let a simple question arise:
Where, in this moment, is there room to choose?
It may appear in:
- where your attention rests
- how you relate to a thought or feeling
- the meaning you give what is happening
- the choice to pause, continue, or respond
Let that room to choose make itself known.
When you notice it, stay with that awareness for a few breaths.
Feel what it is like to recognize that participation is already happening here.
Feel the potential in the ongoing interplay between awareness and choice.
If something shifts naturally—a breath easing, a posture softening, a response clarifying—allow it.
If nothing shifts, that is fine too.
The point is noticing that freedom to choose already exists.
Before ending the practice, let this acknowledgment settle:
There is freedom to choose how I meet this moment.
Take one final breath.
As you return to whatever comes next, you don’t need to hold onto this experience. You can trust that room to choose will appear again—whenever you notice where you already are.

If you find yourself returning to the same emotional patterns, this reflection offers a helpful way of understanding how those patterns take hold and how they can begin to shift.
This practice connects to a broader question of how we participate in what unfolds next, which is explored more fully here.
